With more than twenty years in the industry and over a decade with Warwick Events, it’s important to Emma and our team to support the next generation in our event community. This can be offering advice and support. An example of this was a talk Emma gave earlier this year to Events Management students at the UK Centre for Events Management at Leeds Beckett University’s School of Events, Tourism and Hospitality Management. But it can also be about giving opportunities.
At a recent international event, Warwick Events worked with Caspian Agency on a Worldwide virtual forum. Along with a core Warwick Events team of seven professionals, fifteen Events Management students were also employed to provide live support on Hopin.
We talked to Kayleigh, one of the 22 strong steward team. She told us a little about what the event gave her personally and how it helped the team’s personal development.
“I’m really grateful for this experience of working with a fabulous team and using Hopin as a platform to work a virtual event. It’s been a brilliant opportunity and one that will be invaluable moving into the post-covid hybrid event world! It’s been great working with such an organised and supportive event company who clearly care about the future of event professionals.
As an Events Management student, we are always learning about events, but it’s been fab to be hands-on and learn how to work in different roles for the forum. I got to work a variety of roles throughout the event which helped me to familiarise with what was expected and rotating roles throughout shifts kept things interesting! Having the back time was really appreciated for a break from screen time. Although we weren’t standing on our feet, staring at a screen can be just as tiring (even more so if we had been busier) and it’s amazing that this was obviously taken into account.
Having our zoom training the day before the event was perfect timing, so everything we learned was fresh in our minds on event day. The training enabled us to meet our event colleagues and the event management team, who welcomed us to ask questions and suggest ideas (and had plenty of patience with us becoming acquainted with the software). The live resources folder was really helpful to have on hand to refer back to our responsibilities throughout the event.
Despite my phone battery being completely drained the last few days, using WhatsApp has been a really useful tool to stay connected with everybody. We had instant support from our supervisors when needed and a bit of a laugh too!
All in all, the event was great, everything seemed to run smoothly and I’m really happy I got to be a part of it! Being treated as an event professional rather than a student has been really beneficial for building our confidence for the future. I think we all felt respected and appreciated, and I really hope we can work on another event together soon – Thankyou!”
