A Best of British evening on the banks of the River Avon

You have travelled half way across the world.  You’re only here for a few days.  You have meetings in your hotel all day. You’re looking for a Best of British experience but the last thing you want to do is board a coach for dinner.  That’s our opinion and our clients agree.  They love dining in a venue where you can walk back to your accommodation.  So, if tiredness engulfs you, you can leave when you want to…

But what if that ‘venue’ doesn’t exist?

Building the perfect dinner venue

We love a challenge.  When your client is the Canadian Corkscrew Collector’s Club it’s not surprising to learn that a British member is a Wine Merchant; that they want to supply wine for the evening… AND they don’t want to pay corkage.

Staying at the Crowne Plaza hotel in Stratford-upon-Avon, the requirements for this event had grown:

  • Walking distance from their accommodation
  • Providing own wine, no corkage
  • Best of British experience for up to 100
  • Pre-dinner activity, lots of different members, varying ages and backgrounds
  • Entertainment throughout the evening
  • Oh, and, the event is on a Saturday in the middle of June (an availability eeeek!)

The ‘Best of British’ experience

When our international guests think of Britain, what springs to mind are Union Jack flags, boating down the river and beautiful countryside. What they might not think of are Morris Men, straw boaters and picnic hampers but all of these featured in our ‘Best of British’ event. We wanted to provide a fully experiential British feel to their annual meeting, creating a truly memorable event – especially as many of the guests had never been to England before.

What did WE do?

Our Event Detailers, complete with stripy shirts, boaters and broad smiles, met the group in the hotel lobby. CCCC members were escorted to the Bancroft Gardens, right in front of the magnificent Royal Shakespeare Theatre, where two Edwardian launches were waiting.  Drinks were served with Champagne flowing as they boarded, and the skippers took them on a gentle cruise on the River Avon.

Disembarking on the other side of the river, they were met by a riot of colour, music, bells and hearty ‘whoops’ of delight by the Shakespeare Morris, our local Morris Dancers (traditional English folk dancing)….

Fun fact: The first written record of Morris (‘Morys’) Dancers was way back in 1448.  That’s over 570 years ago.

British grub

Moving through to dinner held in a marquee, nestled on a river bank in the heart of Stratford-upon-Avon, the weather wasn’t kind to us, but with swathes of union bunting, wild flowers and large windows onto the river – the rain didn’t have an impact on the evening.

An artisan picnic hamper was the food theme for the evening.  Guests devoured a buffet of homemade pies, seasonal salads, ‘Scotch eggs’, local cheeses, deli breads, cut meats and much, much more.  Keeping it British, and traditional, there was Eton mess, trifle and apple crumble and custard for dessert.  Just writing this is making me hungry!

After dinner, one of our favourite bands, reduced to a two-piece for the night very quickly had guests on their feet – singing and dancing the night away.

I started working with Warwick Events through an introduction, always a good way to start. In our first planning meetings, Emma was quick to grasp what I was trying to plan, she just made my ideas come alive and in a vastly improved form. As the event loomed nearer I worked with Lou who again was extremely helpful in last minute changes and keeping me up to date with the countdown to the event.

The event itself was brilliant and worked like clockwork. They dealt with caterers, all the entertainment, the site owners, marquee company etc.

Attendees from all over the world are still sharing great feedback. I’d have no hesitation in recommending Warwick Events whether you want them to create your event from scratch or just take your ideas and make them much better!

Regards Jim

While the Crowne Plaza completely fitted the bill for the CCCC meeting places and spaces, WE created a unique and authentic event which gave them a true sense of place, allowing them to experience British food and local culture at its best.
